The MDX parser now strictly follows CommonMark emphasis rules, changing how emphasis markers work around spaces and punctuation.
Custom plugins may need refactoring or a rewrite because the new AST is structured differently.
Official Unified, Remark, and Rehype packages are ESM-only and no longer support CommonJS require; use ESM configuration or dynamic imports.
MDX no longer transforms indented text into code blocks; use regular fenced code block syntax instead.
Docusaurus v3 parses directives through remark-directive; unhandled directives are ignored and are not rendered in their original form.
MDX compiles Markdown more strictly, so content that compiled in Docusaurus v2 can fail or render differently and may need refactoring.
Custom mappings are sandboxed: lowercase mappings apply to Markdown elements but not JSX elements, and lowercase custom element names are no longer substituted; use uppercase names for other elements.
Docusaurus v3 requires Node.js >= 18.0; update local, CI, CDN, or host environments and the package engines field.
Docusaurus v3 requires React >= 18.0; custom React code may be affected by React 18 breaking changes.
New APIs and options 1
Docusaurus v3 supports ES Modules configuration files, allowing Remark plugins to be imported directly in the config.
Tooling 2
Run the checker to list files that will fail to compile under MDX v3; it reports compilation errors, not subtle rendering changes.
TypeScript users should replace the external @tsconfig/docusaurus package with the official @docusaurus/tsconfig package.
